Why Choose Intuitive Eating?
As time spent in quarantine drags on and social distancing measures remain in place, we know that the talk around “COVID weight gain” and diet talk continues to increase as well. As clinicians, we genuinely believe in an anti-diet approach for building a healthy relationship around food. Diets typically promise fast results but require the restriction of certain foods or food groups. This causes deprivation and makes following these kinds of plans impossible for the long term. The diet industry earns about 60 billion dollars a year from consumers, and if long term weight loss and sustainable health improvements were achievable based on the diet industry’s recommendations, we would not see these diets circle back around each time.
Instead, our dietitians encourage people to work towards Intuitive Eating, which moves away from diet talk and labeling foods as “good or bad.” Intuitive Eating uses a mindful eating approach and emphasizes self-care to incorporate joyful movement. It allows us to be more “tuned in” to our own hunger and fullness signals, so that we can feel comfortable and use these principles for a lifetime and not just for a brief moment. An excellent resource that we recommend for learning about Intuitive Eating is the book “Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach” written by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch.
